US Zappa Hop Profile

Origin:
  • United States (New Mexico)
  • Rediscovered wild hop from the mountains of New Mexico, later released and cultivated by CLS Farms (Yakima Valley)
  • Named in tribute to musician Frank Zappa, with the blessing of the Zappa family/estate
Type:
  • Aroma hop (sometimes used for bittering, but truly shines as an expressive, late or dry hop)
Typical Alpha Acids:
  • 7–9%
Beta Acids:
  • 5–6.5%
Aroma & Flavor Notes:
  • Tropical Fruit: Big notes of mango, passionfruit, and pineapple
  • Citrus: Tangy orange, grapefruit zest, and lemon
  • Pine: Resinous, classic pine sap and fresh wood
  • Mint: Herbal, fresh minty lift (“wild” character)
  • Dank: Cannabis-like, funky, with notes of sage and menthol
  • Other: Fruity pebbles, berry, and sometimes spicy wildflower or tarragon
Brewing Characteristics:
  • Known for its uniquely “wild,” avant-garde flavor and aroma—Zappa is a true one-of-a-kind
  • Performs best in late/whirlpool/dry hop for hops-forward, experimental, or hazy beers
  • Popular in IPAs, hazy styles, saisons, and wild ales
Best Beer Styles:
  • IPA, Hazy IPA, Pale Ale
  • Experimental and hazy beers
  • Saison and farmhouse styles
  • Fruity or wild ales
Substitutes:
  • No exact substitute (it is truly unique!), but you may blend Mosaic, Sabro, and Ekuanot to mimic its wild character

Fun Fact:
Zappa’s flavors are as distinctive as its namesake—“born wild in the mountains of New Mexico,” it brings creativity and unpredictability to any modern beer.
