NZ Green Bullet Hop Profile
Origin:
- New Zealand
- Released by the New Zealand Hop Research Program in the 1970s
- Derived from Fuggle and an open pollination of New Zealand varietals
Type:
- Dual-purpose (well-known as an excellent bittering hop, but also flavorful for aroma/flavor additions)
Typical Alpha Acids:
- 11–14%
Beta Acids:
- 6–8%
Aroma & Flavor Notes:
- Pine: Clean, bold pine resin (classic “old school” New Zealand note)
- Spicy: Black pepper, nutmeg, and bold noble spice
- Herbal: Sweet hay, hayloft, and green herbs
- Dried Fruit: Raisin, prune, sultana, and sometimes toffee
- Other: Soft floral, mild earthiness, rich “old world” base
Brewing Characteristics:
- Famous for adding smooth, robust bitterness—assertive but clean (never harsh or sharp)
- Brings a unique NZ flavor: spicy, herbal, resinous, and layered with dried fruit
- Often used as a showcase hop in single-hop beers or in classic English and NZ ale/lager styles
Best Beer Styles:
- NZ and English-style Pale Ale, ESB
- IPA and Double IPA
- Strong Lager, Export Lager, Bock
- Porter, Stout, Bitter, Cream Ale
Substitutes:
- Fuggle (earthier, less pine/spice)
- Northern Brewer (softer, less fruit/spice)
- Cluster or Nugget (clean bittering, less fruit/earth)
