US HBC 630 Hop Profile

Origin:
United States
Experimental variety developed by the Hop Breeding Company (HBC)—part of the next wave of modern “aroma bomb” hops from Yakima Valley, still pre-commercial and seen in limited releases.
Type:
Aroma hop (can also be dual-purpose)
Typical Alpha Acids:
11–15%
Beta Acids:
~6–7%
Aroma & Flavor Notes:
  • Red Berry: Cherry, raspberry, red currant
  • Tropical Fruit: Mango, pineapple, sweet fruit punch
  • Stone Fruit: Peach, apricot
  • Candy: Fruity candy (“sweet tart” or “lollipop” notes often cited)
  • Citrus: Bright sweet orange, lemon zest
  • Other: Hints of floral, black currant, mild herbal
Brewing Characteristics:
  • Delivers a juicy, high-impact berry and stone fruit aroma with a sweet candied edge
  • An experimental favorite in hazy/juicy IPAs thanks to the layered fruit spectrum
  • Expressive, modern flavor profile—excellent for late additions, whirlpool, and dry hop
  • Can be the star in single-hop beers, but blends well with Citra, Mosaic, and El Dorado
Best Beer Styles:
  • Hazy IPA / Juicy IPA
  • American Pale Ale
  • Fruited Wheat and Blonde Ale
  • Session IPA
Substitutes:
  • Strata (berry & tropics with dank edge)
  • El Dorado (tropical, stone fruit, but less berry)
  • Mosaic (berry notes & tropicals, but more earthy)
Fun Fact:
HBC 630 is known for its “candy-like” berry and punch flavor—early trial beers often described it as “fruit smoothie in a glass.”
