Canadian Bitter Gold Hop Profile
Origin:
- Originally bred in the US (Yakima, Washington—released in 2003), but also grown in Canada
- Canadian Bitter Gold can express a slightly softer, fruitier character due to the local terroir
Type:
- Dual-purpose (high alpha for bittering, with rich flavor/aroma)
Typical Alpha Acids:
- 13–15.5%
Beta Acids:
- 4–7%
Aroma & Flavor Notes:
- Orange: Sweet orange peel, tangerine zest
- Apricot/Stone Fruit: Significant ripe apricot, peach, and nectar
- Melon: Honeydew, cantaloupe, and a touch of watermelon
- Pear: Subtle juicy pear (a unique element of Bitter Gold)
- Pine: Mild, balanced piney backbone
- Other: Sometimes soft floral notes, faint grass, or candy-like sweetness (more pronounced in Canadian-grown)
Brewing Characteristics:
- Canadian Bitter Gold is appreciated for its smooth, potent, and clean bitterness
- As a late and dry hop, it delivers a very fruity, almost fruit-cocktail character with the classic American pine note kept in check
- Works well in single-hop or in blends with citrus/tropical or soft noble hops
Best Beer Styles:
- IPA, Double IPA, Pale Ale
- Blonde Ale, Golden Ale, Cream Ale
- Wheat Beer, Saison, Fruit Beer
- Modern Lager, West Coast Ale
Substitutes:
- US Bitter Gold (very close—generally indistinguishable in most beers)
- Nugget (more herbal, less fruit)
- Columbus/CTZ (higher dank and pine, less stone fruit)
- El Dorado (also very fruity, but more melon/candy)
Fun Fact:
Bitter Gold was bred from a mix of Brewer’s Gold, Bullion, Comet, and a wild hop from Canada—so true “Canadian” roots run deep in this one!
