Canadian Magnum Hop Profile
Origin:
- Originally bred in Germany at the Hüll Research Center (1980s), but also grown in Canada
- Canadian Magnum is known for its reliability and clean, smooth bittering, similar to classic German Magnum but sometimes described as having a slightly brighter or “softer” finish
Type:
- Dual-purpose, most famous and widely used as a bittering hop
Typical Alpha Acids:
- 11–16%
Beta Acids:
- 5–7%
Aroma & Flavor Notes:
- Mild Spice: Gentle, classic German hop spice
- Floral: Soft blossoms, light wildflower
- Herbal: Subtle green tea, grassy undertones
- Earthy: Clean earth, very mild and not "rustic"
- Other: Sometimes hints of citrus or apple in Canadian lots
Brewing Characteristics:
- Highly prized as a clean, efficient bittering hop—delivers smooth bitterness with very little flavor or aroma “baggage”
- Adds a gently herbal, floral touch when used in late additions—but rarely dominates a finished beer
- Canadian-grown Magnum is just as versatile, reliable, and neutral as its German cousin, sometimes with a slightly brighter finish
Best Beer Styles:
- Pilsner, Helles, and International Lager
- Pale Ale, IPA (as main or supporting bittering hop)
- Wheat Beer, Kölsch, Cream Ale
- Export styles, Bock, Blonde Ale
Substitutes:
- German Magnum (essentially identical for most purposes)
- Horizon (similar smooth bitterness)
- Nugget (clean, but slightly bolder in character)
- Perle (less alpha, but soft spicy/floral)
Fun Fact:
Canadian Magnum is a workhorse in craft and production breweries alike—its combination of clean, consistent bitterness and little-to-no impact on aroma make it a go-to for brewers focused on balance and drinkability.
