Canadian Saaz Hop Profile
Origin:
- Grown in Canada, originally from the classic Czech Saaz lineage
- Canadian Saaz delivers the same gentle, noble characteristics of Czech Saaz, often with a slightly brighter or cleaner edge due to the local terroir and soil
Type:
- Aroma hop (world-famous “noble” hop, low alpha acids, prized for aroma and flavor)
Typical Alpha Acids:
- 2.5–4.5%
Beta Acids:
- 3–4.5%
Aroma & Flavor Notes:
- Spicy: Mild white pepper, gentle noble spice
- Herbal: Fresh-cut grass, lemongrass, green tea
- Floral: Subtle blossom, lavender, spring flower
- Earthy: Clean, slightly woody and rooty
- Other: Delicate, unobtrusive bitterness; faint citrus peel in some Canadian lots
Brewing Characteristics:
- Famous for its soft, balanced bitterness and refined, classic “noble” aroma
- Canadian Saaz performs beautifully in lagers, wheat beers, and delicate ales where balance and fineness are essential
- Great for late/whirlpool/dry hop additions to lock in noble qualities
Best Beer Styles:
- Pilsner (especially lager, Czech, and international)
- Kölsch, Blonde Ale, Helles
- Wheat beers
- Saison, Table Beer, Cream Ale
Substitutes:
- Czech Saaz (the archetype, nearly identical)
- Tettnanger or Hallertau Mittelfrüh (for more floral/herbal, slightly higher alpha)
- Spalt (for earth, but less spice)
Fun Fact:
Saaz is one of the four classic “noble” hops. Canadian-grown Saaz is gaining attention for maintaining tradition while offering a hint of the crisp freshness that Canadian hops are known for!
