Canadian Triumph Hop Profile
Origin:
- Grown in Canada from the US-bred Triumph hop (released by USDA in 2019)
- Canadian Triumph may show slightly softer or brighter fruit/floral character due to local terroir, but is otherwise very close to its US sibling
Type:
- Dual-purpose, but especially valued for its bright aroma and smooth bitterness
Typical Alpha Acids:
- 9–12%
Beta Acids:
- 3.5–5.5%
Aroma & Flavor Notes:
- Citrus: Orange zest, lime, and gentle lemon
- Stone Fruit: Peach, apricot, cherry, and sweet plum
- Berry: Raspberry, mixed berry, sometimes with a light hard-candy note
- Pine: Soft pine, fresh and light (not as dank as many classic US hops)
- Floral: Subtle violet or spring blossom aroma
Brewing Characteristics:
- Canadian Triumph stands out for its rounded citrus and stone fruit bouquet, clean berry aroma, and a gentle pine/floral undertone
- Excels in whirlpool or dry hop for fruit-forward modern ales and lagers; also performs beautifully as a single hop
- Produces a smooth, refined bitterness
Best Beer Styles:
- Pale Ale, IPA, Hazy IPA
- Lager (hoppy/modern), Golden Ale
- Blonde Ale, Cream Ale, Wheat Beer
- Fruit-forward Kölsch or Saison
Substitutes:
- US Triumph (the same pedigree)
- Idaho 7 (more tropical, less floral)
- Mandarina Bavaria (sweeter orange, less pine)
- Calypso (similar stone fruit, less citrus)
Fun Fact:
While Triumph is a relatively new hop, it’s turning heads for its “fruit punch” blend of citrus, berry, and stone fruit—paired with subtle floral/pine, it offers big modern flavors without overpowering bitterness.
