UK Fuggle Hop Profile

Origin:
  • Discovered in Kent, England in 1861 by Richard Fuggle
  • One of the classic English aroma hops, synonymous with traditional British beer
Typical Alpha Acids:
  • 3–5.5%
Beta Acids:
  • 1.5–2%
Aroma & Flavor Notes:
  • Earthy: Soft, classic English earth and loam character
  • Woody: Cedar, light oak
  • Mild Spice: Gentle pepper, subtle herbal spice
  • Floral: Hints of wildflowers, subtle and not sweet
  • Subtle Fruit: Sometimes a faint note of currants or berries, but not dominant
Brewing Characteristics:
  • Renowned for providing mild, gentle bitterness and a truly “English” aroma
  • Use as a single hop or as part of a blend for balanced traditional styles
  • Pairs beautifully with malty beers; great for late kettle additions and dry hopping
Best Beer Styles:
  • English Pale Ale, Bitter, and ESB
  • Porter, Stout, Mild
  • Brown Ale
  • Traditional English barleywine and vintage ales
Substitutes:
  • Willamette (US-grown, similar but slightly fruitier)
  • Styrian Goldings (continental Fuggle; softer, slightly more floral)
  • East Kent Goldings (for more pronounced floral)

Fun Fact:
Fuggle is so deeply ingrained in British brewing that it's considered the quintessential hop for recreating Victorian-era recipes.
