UK Whitbread Golding Variety (WGV) Hop Profile
Origin:
- UK-bred, first selected in the 1910s
- Named after the Whitbread brewery and a “Golding” seedling, though genetically different from classic East Kent Golding
Typical Alpha Acids:
- 5–8% (sometimes 4.5–7%)
Beta Acids:
- 2.3–3%
Aroma & Flavor Notes:
- Fruity: Subtle notes of apricot, light stone fruit, and even hints of fresh hay
- Mild spice: Sometimes a gentle, crisp spice is present
- Floral: Traditional light floral notes typical of many English hops
- Earthy: Soft English earthiness, never overwhelming
- Mellow citrus: Faint marmalade or citrus zest (not dominant)
Brewing Characteristics:
- “Gentle and elegant” profile—a classic all-round hop for English ales
- Great for balanced bitters, pale ales, porters, and traditional stouts
- Lends a rounded, layered complexity rather than punchy intensity
Usage:
- Traditional British styles: Pale Ale, Bitter, ESB, Mild, Porter, Stout
- Can be used in both aroma and bittering additions
Substitutes:
- East Kent Goldings (for a slightly more floral profile)
- Fuggle (for more earthiness)
- Progress (for a similar but milder profile)
