US Apollo Hop Profile
Origin:
- United States
- Bred by the Hopsteiner Breeding Program and released in 2006
- Developed from Zeuss and a female USDA variety
Type:
- Dual-purpose, but primarily known as a bittering hop due to exceptionally high alpha acids
Typical Alpha Acids:
- 15–19% (one of the highest)
Beta Acids:
- 6–9%
Aroma & Flavor Notes:
- Citrus: Orange, grapefruit, lime zest—prominent in late and dry hopping
- Resinous/Pine: Dank pine, sticky resin
- Spicy: Black pepper and herbal notes
- Earthy: Slightly pungent, green, “classic American” hop backbone
- Other: Occasional hints of cannabis/dank and light tropical fruit
Brewing Characteristics:
- Known for ultra-clean, efficient bittering (stable at high boiling temps)
- When used as a late or dry hop, Apollo imparts bright citrus and resinous notes—excellent for flavor addition
- Works great as a “workhorse” bittering hop for big, aggressive styles and blends well with new-world aroma varieties
Best Beer Styles:
- IPA, Double IPA, Triple IPA
- American Pale Ale
- Imperial Stout, Barleywine
- Black IPA, American Strong Ale
Substitutes:
- Bravo (for clean bitterness and subtle citrus)
- Columbus/Tomahawk/Zeus (“CTZ” for dank/citrus/earthy)
- Simcoe (for pine, but more fruit)
Fun Fact:
Apollo is prized for not just its bitterness but for bringing a bright citrus character to late-hop and dry-hop additions—a favorite of modern American IPA brewers aiming for high ABV, bold beers.
