US Bergamot Hop Profile

Origin:
  • United States
  • Bred by the Hopsteiner breeding program, developed to provide unique citrus and floral aromatics
Type:
  • Aroma hop
Typical Alpha Acids:
  • 7–11%
Beta Acids:
  • 3–4%
Aroma & Flavor Notes:
  • Orange: Distinct and pronounced, reminiscent of orange zest and marmalade
  • Citrus: Lemongrass, lime, and general citrus complexity
  • Floral: Perfume-like bouquet, sweet and delicate, similar to Earl Grey’s bergamot aroma
  • Tropical Fruit: Subtle undertones of melon and juicy fruit
  • Tea: Sometimes a black tea or herbal edge (Earl Grey quality)
Brewing Characteristics:
  • Provides bright, zesty, and aromatic citrus with a floral lift
  • Works best as a late addition or for dry hopping to maximize unique aromatics
  • Can be used in a wide range of lighter and hop-forward beer styles
Best Beer Styles:
  • IPA, Session IPA, and Hazy IPA
  • Pale Ale
  • Blonde Ale, Belgian Blonde
  • Wheat beer, Summer ales, and other lighter styles
  • Saison, specialty lagers
Substitutes:
  • Mandarina Bavaria (for orange, but softer and sweeter)
  • Lemondrop (for citrus, but less floral)
  • Motueka (for lime, but more tropical and less floral)

Fun Fact:
Bergamot is named after the fragrant bitter orange used to flavor Earl Grey tea! Brewers looking for “orange marmalade and floral perfume” find this hop truly unique.
