US Comet Hop Profile
Origin:
- United States
- Bred by the USDA in the 1960s and released in 1974
- Originally developed for high-alpha bittering, now much loved for its unique aroma/flavor as well
Type:
- Dual-purpose (especially prized for both bittering and aroma in modern craft brewing)
Typical Alpha Acids:
- 7–12%
Beta Acids:
- 3–6%
Aroma & Flavor Notes:
- Grapefruit: Bold, zesty grapefruit peel (the hop’s calling card)
- Lime: Tangy lime, sometimes juicy orange and lemon
- Tropical Fruit: Hints of pineapple and passionfruit
- Herbal: Fresh-cut grass, light mint, a subtle “wild hop” note
- Earthy/Dank: Slightly catty, dank background, especially in dry hopping
- Other: Old-school “American wild” aroma—fruity, grassy, and slightly rustic
Brewing Characteristics:
- Brings a bright, juicy burst of citrus and unmistakable grapefruit for late and dry hopping
- Grounded by herbal, earthy, and wild-hop undertones—lots of classic “old-school” American charm
- Performs as a bold single hop or as a key part of modern hazy/juicy blends
Best Beer Styles:
- IPA, Hazy IPA, West Coast IPA
- American Pale Ale, Blonde Ale
- Wheat Beer, Cream Ale
- Lager (for fresh, citrus-punch presence)
- Fruited and sour beers
Substitutes:
- Citra (bigger tropics/citrus, less wild)
- Centennial (citrus forward, more floral/pine)
- Canadian Comet (fruity but usually softer/less catty)
Fun Fact:
Comet was nearly forgotten after being “too wild” for American lagers—but it’s made a huge comeback in craft brewing for its vibrant, juicy citrus and retro-cool character.
