Origin:
  • United States
  • Developed by the USDA breeding program and released in 1978
  • Bred from Brewer’s Gold and open pollination
Type:
  • Dual-purpose (primarily used for bittering, but also offers pleasant flavor/aroma)
Typical Alpha Acids:
  • 11–14%
Beta Acids:
  • 7–9%
Aroma & Flavor Notes:
  • Citrus: Clean grapefruit, lime, and orange zest
  • Blackcurrant: Subtle blackcurrant or dark berry
  • Fruit: Pear, apple, and ripe stone fruit
  • Spicy: Gentle spice, black pepper
  • Herbal: Soft tea-like herbal quality
  • Other: Mild floral, and a smooth, earthy, clean background
Brewing Characteristics:
  • One of the main American bittering hops (high alpha, clean and reliable)
  • Adds a moderate and very clean bitterness even at high IBU
  • In late and dry hopping, provides a mild but pleasant blend of citrus, stone fruit, and berry, especially when balanced with other US aroma hops
  • Stable, reliable, and widely available—used in a tremendous range of beer styles
Best Beer Styles:
  • IPA, Pale Ale
  • Blonde Ale, Cream Ale
  • Porter, Stout
  • Amber, Brown, and Red Ales
  • American Lager
Substitutes:
  • Nugget (clean bittering, slightly more herbal)
  • Cluster (old-school US, less bold, more floral)
  • Columbus/CTZ (bittering, more dank and piney)

Fun Fact:
Galena was the most widely grown hop in the US for many years due to excellent yields and top-notch bittering power, and it’s still a backbone hop for both craft and macro brewers.
