US McKenzie Hop Profile
Origin:
- United States (Oregon)
- Developed by the Indie Hops breeding program in the Willamette Valley and released to brewers around 2021
- Named after Oregon’s famed McKenzie River
Type:
- Aroma hop (bold, modern, made for late additions and dry hopping)
Typical Alpha Acids:
- 8–10%
Beta Acids:
- 4–5%
Aroma & Flavor Notes:
- Berry: Bright red raspberry, boysenberry, and blackberry, with some batches showing blueberry
- Tropical Fruit: Big juicy papaya, mango, and a touch of pineapple
- Citrus: Ripe orange, tangerine, and sweet lime
- Stone Fruit: Nectarine and apricot, with a round, juicy vibe
- Herbal: Soft mint or tea notes, adding complexity
- Other: Some brewers pick up hints of floral/lavender, or even a little hard candy
Brewing Characteristics:
- Created for “the new school of juicy IPAs”—McKenzie delivers a fruit-forward punch with a smooth, clean bitterness
- Bursting with expressive American-style character, especially when used in whirlpool or dry hopping
- Stands out well as a single-hop showcase but also complements tropical- or berry-heavy blends
Best Beer Styles:
- IPA, Hazy IPA, Pale Ale
- Blonde, Golden Ale
- American Wheat and Summer Ale
- Fruity lagers—anything that wants a big “juicy” character
Substitutes:
- Mosaic (big fruit, but with more blueberry and pine)
- El Dorado (more candy/fruity, less herbal)
- Amarillo (more orange/citrus, less berry/tropical)
Fun Fact:
Bred for the “juicy” beer generation, McKenzie has found a following with brewers wanting something both fruit-packed and distinctly Oregonian!
