US Tettnang (Tettnanger) Hop Profile

Origin:
  • Originally from Tettnang, Germany, but grown in the United States (notably in the Pacific Northwest)
  • The US version is similar to the German, but sometimes displays slightly less spicy/herbal character and a touch more citrus
Type:
  • Aroma hop (classic “noble” hop)
Typical Alpha Acids:
  • 3–5.5%
Beta Acids:
  • 3–5%
Aroma & Flavor Notes:
  • Floral: Soft, perfumed, slightly sweet flowers
  • Herbal: Classic noble herbal, mild tea-like or fresh-cut grass
  • Spicy: White pepper, light clove (“noble spice”)
  • Earthy: Gentle, mellow English-style earth tones
  • Citrus: Very subtle—sometimes a hint of orange or lemon zest, especially in US-grown lots
Brewing Characteristics:
  • Renowned for balanced, classic “noble” aroma—never overpowering
  • Delicate bitterness, ideal for Pilsner, Kölsch, Helles, Cream Ale, Blonde, Wheat, and more
  • Can be used for both bittering and aroma
Best Beer Styles:
  • Pilsner, Kölsch, Lager (American, German, and International styles)
  • Blonde Ale, Cream Ale
  • Wheat beer, Saison
  • Light English and Belgian ales
Substitutes:
  • Hallertau Mittelfrüh (closest noble substitute)
  • Saaz, Spalt
  • German-grown Tettnang for truest profile

Fun Fact:
While US Tettnang is often marketed as nearly identical to German Tettnanger, some brewers note slightly more citrus and less herbal/spice in the American version—making it great for unique takes on both lagers and ales!
