Canadian Centennial Hop Profile

Origin:
  • Grown in Canada from the US Centennial variety (released 1990, Yakima, WA), with Canada’s climate often bringing a slightly softer, sometimes more floral/citrus expression
Type:
  • Dual-purpose, prized for both bittering and expressive late/flavor/aroma
Typical Alpha Acids:
  • 9–12%
Beta Acids:
  • 3–5%
Aroma & Flavor Notes:
  • Citrus: Bold lemon, orange, and grapefruit zest
  • Floral: Spring blossoms, elderflower, and rose
  • Pine: Distinct resinous, piney backbone (classic “C-hop” profile)
  • Herbal/Earthy: Green herbal, touch of mint, mild earthiness
  • Other: Sometimes subtle hints of lemongrass or black pepper in Canadian-grown lots
Brewing Characteristics:
  • Canadian Centennial offers a classic, crisp blend of citrus, pine, and floral notes, typically with a rounder/softer character than some US harvests
  • Excels as a single hop or blends well with other American or Canadian varieties
  • Performs at all stages of brewing—great for bittering, aroma, dry hopping
Best Beer Styles:
  • IPA, West Coast IPA, Hazy IPA
  • Pale Ale, Wheat Beer
  • Blonde Ale, Golden Ale
  • Amber Ale, Red Ale
Substitutes:
  • US Centennial (nearly identical, just sharper citrus/pine)
  • Cascade (sweeter orange, less floral/pine)
  • Amarillo (more orange, less pine/floral)

Fun Fact:
Centennial is often called “Super Cascade” for its potent citrus-pine punch and is a backbone hop for classic Pacific Northwest and Canadian craft IPAs and pale ales.
