US Amarillo Hop Profile
Origin:
- United States (Washington State, Yakima Valley)
- Discovered and developed by Virgil Gamache Farms
- Released commercially in 2003
Type:
- Dual-purpose (used for both bittering and especially for late/dry hop aroma/flavor)
Typical Alpha Acids:
- 7–11%
Beta Acids:
- 5.5–7%
Aroma & Flavor Notes:
- Orange: Big, sweet orange peel and juice (signature Amarillo trait)
- Citrus: Grapefruit, lemon, lime zest
- Tropical Fruit: Passionfruit, apricot, peach, and melon
- Floral: Rose, violet, and subtle wildflower
- Herbal: Soft tea-like notes, occasionally a slight earthy edge
- Other: Sometimes subtle spice or pepper, but fruit is most dominant
Brewing Characteristics:
- Delivers a fresh, bright, and expressive citrus (“orange bomb”) character—especially vibrant in late addition or dry hopping
- Adds juicy, modern American flavor to hazy and West Coast IPAs, pale ales, wheats, blondes, and summer ales
- Well-loved in single-hop beers, and blends beautifully in hop-forward styles
Best Beer Styles:
- IPA (West Coast, Hazy, Double), Pale Ale
- Wheat Beer, Blonde Ale, Summer Ale
- Fruited and Sour Ales
Substitutes:
- Citra (sweeter, more tropical/melon than orange)
- Cascade (more grapefruit, less intense orange)
- Mandarina Bavaria (brighter orange, less floral/earthy)
Fun Fact:
The name “Amarillo” is Spanish for “yellow”—a nod to the golden color of this hop’s cones when ripe, and to its signature orange-citrus character!
