US Columbus Hop Profile

Origin:
  • United States
  • Also marketed as part of “CTZ” (Columbus, Tomahawk, Zeus) hops—a trio of nearly identical varieties bred in the Yakima Valley
Type:
  • Dual-purpose (but especially famed for powerful bittering and old-school IPA aroma)
Typical Alpha Acids:
  • 14–18%
Beta Acids:
  • 4–5.5%
Aroma & Flavor Notes:
  • Earthy/Dank: Pungent, deep “dank” and earthy, often described as cannabis-like
  • Citrus: Sharp grapefruit, lemon peel, zesty orange
  • Pine: Bold pine resin, sticky and classic American hop
  • Spicy/Herbal: Black pepper, subtle licorice, mild fresh herbs
  • Other: Sometimes onion/garlic notes (especially in dry hopping), rich musky undertones
Brewing Characteristics:
  • Celebrated for clean, efficient, and aggressive bittering in the boil (perfect for high-IBU beers)
  • Delivers huge aroma in late and dry hopping: dank, citrus, pine, and a touch of spice
  • Key hop for West Coast IPA, Double IPA, Imperial Stout, and classic “old school” American beers
Best Beer Styles:
  • IPA (West Coast, Double, Black)
  • Pale Ale
  • Imperial Stout, American Barleywine
  • Strong Ale, Brown Ale
Substitutes:
  • Tomahawk/Zeus (CTZ—virtually identical in profile)
  • Chinook (more pine, less dank/citrus)
  • Nugget (clean bittering, less pungent aroma)

Fun Fact:
Columbus is a backbone of the West Coast IPA revolution—renowned for its intense dankness and high alpha acids, it’s the “secret sauce” behind many classic American hop bombs.
