US Erebus Hop Profile

Origin:
  • United States
  • Newer variety bred by Jackson Farms in Idaho; name inspired by the Greek god of darkness and the scientific mystery
  • Released only recently (2020s), gaining attention in US craft brewing circles for unique flavor
Type:
  • Dual-purpose (solid for bittering and especially late/aroma additions)
Typical Alpha Acids:
  • 14–17%
Beta Acids:
  • 4–6%
Aroma & Flavor Notes:
  • Berry: Blackberry, dark currant, black raspberry
  • Tropical Fruit: Guava, mango, and ripe papaya
  • Citrus: Orange zest, tangerine, ruby red grapefruit
  • Herbal: Sweet tea, subtle sage or mint
  • Other: Sometimes subtle cocoa, cedar, or sweet dried fruit
Brewing Characteristics:
  • Noted for bold, dark berry and fruit punch character—excellent for juicy and fruit-forward modern ales and IPAs
  • Works beautifully as a single hop or blended with citrus/tropical hops for added depth
  • Robust, clean bitterness supports expressive late and dry hop additions
Best Beer Styles:
  • IPA, Hazy IPA, Pale Ale
  • Fruity Wheat Beer
  • Blonde Ale, Golden Ale
  • Hoppy Stouts (for berry/chocolate twist)
Substitutes:
  • Strata (similar berry/tropical, less citrus)
  • Mosaic (strong fruit, but more stone fruit/citrus)
  • Ekuanot (berry, tropical, mild spice)

Fun Fact:
Erebus hops are known for their “dark juicy” aroma and ability to add a mysterious, bold hit to hazy or modern hop-forward beers—a perfect fit for bold, fruit-forward craft brews.
