US Horizon Hop Profile

Origin:

  • United States (Oregon)

  • Bred by the USDA-ARS Hop Breeding Program, released in 1997

  • Grown primarily in the Pacific Northwest, especially Oregon and Washington

Type:

  • Dual-purpose hop (mild bittering and aroma)

Typical Alpha Acids:

  • 8–12%

Beta Acids:

  • 4.5–7%

Aroma & Flavor Notes:

  • Floral: Mild, delicate floral bouquet

  • Citrus: Subtle lemon and sweet orange zest

  • Herbal: Gentle, grassy, and slightly spicy undertones

  • Other: Hints of honeydew melon and light apple

Brewing Characteristics:

  • Known for its smooth, clean bitterness and delicate aroma profile

  • Excellent for balanced lagers, wheat beers, and lighter ales

  • Performs well as a single hop or in blends for subtle complexity

  • Low cohumulone content delivers a soft, mellow bitterness

Best Beer Styles:

  • Lager (especially American and Helles)

  • Wheat Beer

  • Blonde Ale

  • Cream Ale

  • Kölsch

Substitutes:

  • Mt. Hood (similar mild floral/citrus)

  • Crystal (more spice, less citrus)

  • Liberty (milder, more floral)

Fun Fact:

Horizon is prized for its low cohumulone—making it one of the smoothest bittering hops available. Its gentle character makes it a go-to for brewers seeking subtlety and balance in both aroma and bitterness.
