US Sterling Hop Profile
Origin:
United States
Developed in Oregon in the 1990s—bred from Saaz with Cascade, Brewer’s Gold, Early Green, and others to capture noble character with US vigor.
Type:
Aroma hop (some bittering capacity—classic “noble” American hop)
Typical Alpha Acids:
6–9%
Beta Acids:
4–6%
Aroma & Flavor Notes (ideal for card callouts):
- Spicy (noble spice, white pepper, subtle clove)
- Herbal (fresh-cut grass, lemongrass, green tea)
- Floral (blossom, wildflower, mild lavender)
- Citrus (soft lemon/lime)
- Earthy (mild root, soft wood)
Brewing Characteristics:
- Delivers a clean, lightly spicy and herbal profile—like Saaz, but with more brightness
- Round bitterness, classic for lagers, pilsners, wheat, and gently hoppy ales
- Great for late/aroma additions and dry hop
Best Beer Styles:
- American and International Lager/Pilsner
- Kölsch, Wheat Beer
- Belgian Blonde, Saison
Substitutes:
- Saaz (classic, softer, earthier)
- Lublin, Tettnang, Mt. Hood
Fun Fact:
Sterling was bred to be a US “answer” to Saaz, thriving in American climates while offering that classic noble feel (with a bit more punch).
