US Zeus Hop Profile
Origin:
- United States – also known as part of the “CTZ” group (Columbus, Tomahawk, Zeus), genetically similar but grown by different growers.
Type:
- Dual-purpose—primarily used for bittering but delivers a punchy aroma when used as a late/dry hop.
Typical Alpha Acids:
- 13–17% (very high, ideal for efficient bittering)
Beta Acids:
- 4–5.5%
Aroma & Flavor Profile:
- Earthy: Bold, dank, and robust (the signature CTZ trait)
- Citrus: Sharp notes of lemon and grapefruit rind
- Spicy: Black pepper, subtle herbal notes, licorice
- Resinous/Pine: Sticky pine sap, “classic American dank”
- Herbal/Cannabis: Sometimes a strong herbal, “green,” or even onion/garlic edge
Brewing Characteristics:
- Zeus delivers clean, assertive bitterness, great for early boil additions.
- Used late, it infuses deep resin, dank, and spicy, citrusy aroma into the beer.
- Works especially well in aggressive, hop-forward beer styles, and is a favorite base for American IPAs and imperials.
Best Beer Styles:
- IPA (West Coast, Hazy, Double/Imperial)
- Pale Ale
- Stout, Black IPA, American Barleywine
- Other hop-heavy styles: American Strong Ale, Brown Ale
Common Substitutes:
- Columbus, Tomahawk (“CTZ” are practically interchangeable)
- Chinook (more pine and spice, less dank)
- Nugget (smooth bittering, less aggressive aroma)
Fun Fact:
Zeus is a workhorse hop for many American craft breweries due to its consistency and flavor punch—it built the backbone of many classic craft IPAs!
